Health & Safety

Health-Safety is essential information needed for travel to Tibet.

To travel to Tibet, you must be acquainted with high mountain sickness. According to our extensive experience working in the Tibet Tourism Sector, we have witnessed thousands of unprepared tourists experience altitude sickness. It is due to the rapid elevation shift. Therefore, many travelers are forced to depart Tibet before finishing their journey inside Tibet. It is due to the human body is affected the most by the cluelessness of Tibet’s environment, which causes issues for many tourists. We would love to shared our first handed experience and knowledge to travelers, to get a very wonderful travel experience in Tibet.

WHAT IS ALTITUDE SICKNESS

When you cannot get enough oxygen, you get altitude sickness, which manifests as headaches, nausea, and difficulty sleeping. This is common and happens to travelers who are not used to the high altitudes, whether male or female, young or old.

Tibet, the “roof of the world,” is approximately 4,300 meters above sea level. When people travel too soon from lower altitudes to high elevations, their bodies are unable to acclimatize as quickly as usual and cannot acquire enough oxygen, since the air is considerably thinner than at sea level because of the high altitude. This explains why the body receives less oxygen than is necessary.

As a result, travelers frequently have severe headaches and other altitude sickness symptoms.

The signs and symptoms often disappear as your body adjusts to the high altitude.

Many people claim that high mountain sickness is comparable to a hangover. But it can harm the brain and lungs, it can also be deadly and serious. More serious symptoms that might damage the lungs and brain in travelers include dizziness, the inability to walk straight, feeling as though they are likely to pass out, and the color of their eyes, lips, and fingernails turning to a gray or blue hue.

It is strongly advised that you consult a doctor or call us at that point. While we are traveling, we will make every effort to deliver you to the nearest, most suitable hospital.

How To Prevent Altitude Sickness?

After considerable research and investigation by doctors and specialists, they advised passengers to;

  1. Exercise regularly and prepare yourself physically and emotionally before going to higher elevations.
  2. It is highly advised to get enough rest upon reaching your high-altitude location and to consume lots of fluids, particularly water.
  3. Avoid eating huge portions and avoiding alcohol for the first two days.
  4. Avoid engaging in strenuous physical activity shortly after arriving.
  5. Consume a lot of carbohydrate-rich foods, such as bread, cereals, grains, potatoes, etc., and plenty of water.
  6. Diamox and other medications for altitude sickness are strongly indicated. Some tourists have reported success in avoiding altitude sickness.
  7. Check the side effects and drug reactions of each prescription with your doctor or pharmacist, especially if you are on medication.

Three Best Ways to Treat

  1. Going to a lower height right away is the best cure for altitude sickness. However, you are permitted to remain at that same altitude to acclimatize, if you only experience a few or no symptoms.
  2. It may also be a good idea to take some altitude medications. Since Lhasa is at 3,600m (10,800ft), the Tibet Nature Tour Agency strongly advises that you begin your journey from there.
  3. This will give you three days and two nights in Lhasa to acclimate and help prevent high-altitude sickness. We strongly encourage you to visit Tibet with fun and delight once you have become used to the altitude.

Sunburns

Sunburns are the second thing to consider.

Tibet’s high elevation causes the Ozone layer and air to be significantly thinner than in other regions of the world. Consequently, tourists should be very concerned about sunburns brought on by ultraviolet radiation.

Taking precautions such as,

  1. Putting on sunscreen (with the highest SPF as it provides the best and longest protection),
  2. Putting on a sunhat
  3. And for all visitors, especially those who are trekking with us, wearing sunglasses is strongly advised.

Diarrhea

Travelers may get diarrhea in Tibet because of the region’s unique culture, cuisine, and environment. It happens as a result of disease, digestive issues, food poisoning, and several other circumstances.

Nevertheless, do not be alarmed; it usually goes away on its own.

It is strongly advised to consume enough water or other liquids, maintain a balanced diet, and take any prescribed medications by your doctor. It is strongly advised to seek medical assistance if you have a severe case of diarrhea.

I had a great time on my trip with Tibet Discovery. Our tour guide, Drolma, was fantastic. informative, adaptable, amiable, and incredibly amusing. I was grateful for the tour company's efforts to organize our flight from Chongqing to Lhasa, send a representative to pick up my permit at the airport in Chongqing, and arrange for a cake to be delivered to Everest Base Camp on the night of my wife's birthday. I appreciate everything.
